Ishmael, seeking a bed for the night, is given the only one available-- To share a large bed with a harpooner. Awakened at Queequeg's entrance, Ishmael rises to peer upon a purple-yellowish tattooed cannibal harboring A shrunken head and what appears to be an axe. After this frightening encounter, Ishmael came to see that this "Cannibal" was a fine and decent man. Hence the quote shown above.
