described as "hideous" and "a creation of the devil"
Is an orphan taken in and raised at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. He falls in love with the lovely gypsy Esmeralda, who brings him water as he is being Pilloried and jeered in the public square.
As Esmeralda rides off with Grigoire, a handsome gypsy, Quasi, his heart broken, turns to the gargoyle and says
- "WHY WAS I NOT MADE OF STONE LIKE THEE"
